Kyle walked along the rows of numbered doors until they reached their own. He ventured inside and slowly lowered his bag to the ground, stifling a sigh as his family filed down the hall with Josh's celebratory shouts leading the brigade. He climbed to the the top bunk and lay silently on his back as Jessica and Josh stormed into the room, simultaneously taking in all of the features. He frowned at the fox buried in her arms and turned away, wondering vaguely why the pest had even come along. He stared at the blue walls in a dull resentment and closed his eyes, listening to the sounds of his siblings' cheers. This was the last time he would see them all together before he went to college. He and Josh were to graduate this year, and Celia had insisted that they take a trip before they all went their separate ways. Of course, it was not so much his future that Kyle was concerned with but rather the thought of what would happen when he was gone. His brother was planning to leave the next month to try out for the state's basketball team, and he himself had already been accepted at a university nearly 200 miles north of here. Josh's spot in the team was practically guaranteed, for, what the boy lacked in age and even academics, was most certainly requited in athletic ability and his years of practice had no doubt added to this.
Kyle heard Ryuichi's soft voice through the wall as he whispered something to Celia, and he squeezed his eyes shut in bitter frustration. What was to become of Jessica when there was only those two to look after her? He would never trust that conniving beast, and it made him sick to think that those who would soon be her only guardians weren't even aware that there was a putrid little boy sleeping in her room every night. A sudden wave of sorrow overtook him as he thought of this, and he forced a deep breath before returning to his train of thought. The world was falling apart before his very eyes, and there was nothing he could do to stop it! What if something were to happen to any of them, and he wasn't there to prevent it? Poor Jessica was just starting a public school, and it was a fragile enough time for this to happen without having to worry about that creature doing something horrible to her. It pained him even more to know that he couldn't dispose of this nemesis even now. With these worries on his mind, what point would it even serve for him to leave? He would be too troubled to maintain his grades anyway, and even the smallest occurrence would send him right back home. This was even excluding the mischief that his brother would so quickly delve into. That was far too much to even think upon.
The bed shook underneath him as Josh rattled the metal railing, and Kyle rolled partially over to glare at him. The boy, ignoring his brother's harsh stare, laughed loudly and gave him a bright grin before releasing the mattress frame. "Come on, Kyle! Cheer up! We have some time to look around before lunch!" Kyle watched him for a moment before smiling in half-hearted consent and climbing back down to the ground. He trod carefully across the carpet to his sister's bunk and held out a gentle hand to her.
"Put a coat on if you want to come with us," he said softly, marking the slightly wounded tone in his voice before clearing his throat. "We've got a few hours." With a whoop of triumph, Josh ran out into the hall, and Kyle threw Nathan a despising frown before addressing him. "I can't stand it when you hide like that. Change back and meet us at the pavilion or you may as well just wait here."
