All was peaceful on the beach. Parents watched their children splashing in the water and dogs played and ran on the sand. The peace was broken by a shrill neigh coming from the trees and a pure black wild stallion galloped out of the trees and onto the beach. Spirit reared and let out another shrill neigh. He watched as people ran to grab their children and wrap them in their arms protectively. The older children ran out of the water to their parents, squealing in fright. Spirit reared again and raced to the water, heading straight for a child that was heading for its parents. Spirit's eyes blazed with anger. It was you people's fault that my parents died. I will kill your puny little child for revenge. He was almost upon the child, who was now crouching and staring up at the wild stallion and shaking with fright, when a human bolted in front of him and grabbed the child away. Spirit skidded to a halt and raced after him. But he felt something wrap around his neck. It tightened as soon as it wrapped around the stallions neck. A rope? He thought. You can't do this to me! I protect my herd! He neighed with rage and turned around to see a human holding the end of the rope in one hand. Spirit galloped straight at him.

Kyle sat silently in the shade of a palm tree drawing circles in the sand with his finger. An alchemy book lay beside him, finished and forgotten while he continued to trace the familiar symbols in the ground. Topping the circle with a small flame like sketch he placed his hand around the edges and looked up to make sure that every human was well out of his range. A blinding light flashed and once it had faded, there was a small glass figure standing out in the sand. He smiled at it, proud of his work, and was about to start another when a shadow landed over him. "What Josh?" he asked, not even bothering to look up. "Do you want to go home already?" The boy didn't answer and at last Kyle decided to look up at him. His brother gave him a bright smile and pointed in the direction of a gigantic sandcastle only a few feet away. He laughed quietly and smiled back at his brother. "Good job, Josh," he said walking over to the castle to inspect it. "Your personal best! Do you mind if I try something?" Kyle looked up at his brother, who nodded encouragingly, and he went to work. Redrawing the circle from memory, Kyle was just about to turn it to glass when he heard something in the distance. He stood up suddenly and stared in the direction he had heard the noise. At first, it seemed that there was nothing there, but, soon, a small black speck appeared charging toward them at an astonishing rate. He pushed his brother back and watched as several helpless parents tried to shield their children from the raging animal. Without a second thought, he leaped from his spot and set his hand on the palm tree. Scratching something onto the the bark, a long, sturdy rope took the place of the tree after a bright flash. Tying the makeshift rope so that it resembled a lasso, he held it nervously by his side. God, what in the world am I doing? He thought, but the child's urgent cries spurred him onward. He threw the rope with all his might at the giant horse, and, to his great surprise it actually caught the creature's neck. His celebrations, however, were short-lived as the livid beast turned on him. He stood his ground, staring the animal in the eyes. No matter what happened, he had to keep it away from Josh. Even if it meant his life...

Spirit raced at the boy. Suddenly he stopped. He didn't know why, but he stopped. He stared straight into the boys eyes, and felt... something. He felt like this puny human was special in some way, and he couldn't harm him. He could be under my hooves now, and I'm standing here looking at him with a rope around my neck. He reared and tried to move forward, but he couldn't. Why? What's going on? He turned around to see another boy looking at him. Staring at him. Who are you, what are you doing to me? He wanted to say, but he couldn't communicate with them. He knew that as well as every horse. Finally fought the calm feelings and reared. He was his own self again. His nostrils flared, he bucked and kicked to try to snap the rope. After a while he stood there, panting. He had used up all his energy trying to breakk free. This kid had a strong grip. Spirit looked at the boy, his eyes no longer burning with the anger that was there before. Instead, it was replaced with a look of wonder and worry at the same. What are you gonna do to me, kid. What are you gonna do to me? Spirit thought to himself.

Kyle sighed in relief as the stallion calmed down. For a moment, the two of them sat in a silent agreement neither of them making a move. He stared at the horse about to release the rope when it suddenly bucked up. Seeing Josh's worried face over his shoulder, he pulled down as hard as he could. I won't let it hurt Josh, he thought defiantly. He is the only friend I have. The only one that cares. Even if it means my life, I can't let this thing get him. The horse continued to rear up every so often the rope slipping an inch or two and burning fiercly at Kyle's hands, but he didn't give up. He closed his eyes tightly and held on with all his might, the cries from the onlookers encouraging him slightly. Finally the horse came to rest again, and he opened his eyes to stare at it with a mixture of exhaustion and suprise. Kyle took in a deep breath, his strength wavering and his knees threatened to give out underneath him, but he stood up his head held high. The horse seemed to have given up, and, for the moment at least, Josh was safe. Making a risky advance, he took a step toward the stallion, his pace slowed slightly by the deep sand. In a slow motion, he held his hand out to the horse's nose, allowing the creature to see that he meant no harm. "It's okay," he whispered in tones so low that no one else could hear. "You're fine now." Kyle reached up carefully and rested his raw palm on the horse's muzzle. He stared meaningfully into the animal's intelligent eyes and smiled. "What in the world are you doing here anyways?"

Spirit pawed the ground and snorted. He wanted to whack this human in the face, but he was too exhausted. He stood there letting the human pet him. I bet you're gonna kill me like the other humans killed my parents. He thought.

Kyle brushed the a lock of the horse's mane out of its face and cast a swift glance at Josh. What was he going to do? He couldn't leave his little brother here while he tried to find a place for this horse to go, but he also couldn't risk keeping him close with this animal around.... For all he knew, it could turn on them any second, and the next time, he might not be able to protect Josh. He could always send his brother home alone, but what if he got lost or kidnapped? Kyle turned back to the horse with an uncomfortable grin. Either way there were risks. He refused now to let his brother out of his sight, but he couldn't just let this horse rampage free either. He had to go home, yet there was no way he could let his parents see the stallion. He felt his head spin, and held onto the equine tightly to keep from falling over. "Josh," he said uncertianly. Picking through his pockets, he found some quarters and tossed them to his brother. They landed in the sand and sent up a slight cloud as they disturbed the surface. He could feel everyone's eyes on him, and chose his next words carefully. "Go to that pay phone and call Aunt Hitomi. Tell her that I need her to come down here." His brother collected the coins from the dirt and ran obediently to the phone. He watched him dial the number and felt his heart lighten slightly. If Hitomi could come, at least she could get his brother away safely. Then he would be free to deal with this brute without worrying. He felt bad bringing their aunt into this, but he didn't have any other choice. "Please don't do anything rash," he whispered in the horse's ear as he kept an eye on his brother. He figured that the horse couldn't understand, but it couldn't hurt to try, could it? He patted the stallion carefully as he saw Josh give him a thumbs up in the distance. He could see his brother still on the phone, but he was too far to even hope to catch some of what he was saying. In moments, he hung up the phone and started to walk back, but Kyle held up his hand to stop him. "No," he said just loud enough for his brother to hear. "Go back, and wait for Obasan. There is no need for you to be here." He could see Josh frown, but, still, the boy turned back and waited by the road without a word of complaint. Kyle sighed in relief and turned back to the huge black creature. "Now, what am I to do with you?"

Spirit pawed the ground again and stared at the silent people around him. You're gonna kill me. I know it, you're gonna kill me. He suddenly felt afraid. What would this human do to him? He didn't want to die. I don't want to join my parents just yet!

Hitomi drove down the road wondering what had happened. Whatever it was, Josh hadn't sounded too worried about it, but Kyle wouldn't have asked for her help unless it was an emergency. He hated to rely on others, and she would be surprised if they weren't in some sort of trouble. Picking up her speed a bit, she found herself in a small sandy parking lot. Not wanting to waste time, she drove directly up to the sandbar and came to a stop beside Josh. The boy seemed completely unharmed, yet disappointed for some reason. She got out of the car to search for Kyle, but it didn't take long for her to spot him. Less than a hundred feet away was a massive wild-looking stallion, and Kyle stood beside it, the beast towering over him by a good foot and a half. She gaped at him, half expecting the horse to charge at them, trampling her nephew in the process. She looked around for something to help him and told Josh to get in the car. Hitomi walked slowly toward the animal, trying her best not to frighten it. She reached out for Kyle's hand, but he refused to take it. Hitomi glared down at him, but he simply shook his head, his eyes flowing from the Josh to the horse. "I can't let him go," Kyle said firmly. "Just take Josh. I will have to figure out what to do"

Spirit glared at the human female with wild eyes blazing with anger. He had his energyu back, why wasn't he trampling these people? He felt an unwanted feeling inside him. Trust. Friendship. Why? Because this puny human had been the only one that managed to stop him and calm him down? The anger faded from his eyes. That was the reason.

Kyle tightened his hold on the rope as Hitomi didn't withdraw her hand. His eyes flashed to the car where he could just make out his brother's face behind the tinted glass. His stomach settled slightly, but now Obasan was the one in danger. He glared at her wishing she would just leave, but fought to keep himself calm so that the horse would not be alerted. Reaching out slowly, he brushed the woman's hand aside and continued to watch her defiantly. "Get Josh home. I told you that I could deal with this, didn't I?" he said firmly. His aunt stood before him for a few more moments, surveying him with weary eyes, but, just as he was about to lose his temper, she straightened up. With one last glance, Hitomi turned her back on him and walked to the car with a robotic stagger. It seemed as if every part of her wanted to turn back and help him, but common sense reminded her that there was nothing she could do. Deep inside, she must have understood that he was right. Getting Josh to safety was of the highest priority. The door shut behind her, and, seconds later, the small blue car was driving down the small sandy path. Kyle felt his knees weaken, never having let Josh so far out of his sight. If anything happens to him now, I will be much to far away to save him. I have to catch up to him; I can't let him out of my sight! he thought desperately and barely had time to stop himself as he started to run. No, I can't. He will be much safer with Hitomi. I just have to trust her. He watched uneasily as the car disappeared beyond the horizon, his entire body feeling weak. Suddenly aware of all the silent on-lookers, he tugged on the rope and took an unsteadied step forward. He had to get this thing out of here. The sooner he got rid of it, the sooner he could get back to Josh. He took another step, ignoring the strain on the rope and trudged forward. It didn't matter where they went or what he did to get rid of it. Whatever it was, he just had to do it fast.

Spirit stepped forward, uncertain of what to do. Should he follow the boy, or stand his ground? He stepped forward once more and than he trotted up beside the human. He would follow him. He trotted in front of him and stopped, looking at him expectently. To get where you wanna go, you'll have to go fast, kid. Spirit thought. Get the stinkin' idea to get on my back. He stepped back as the boy tried to go around him. Get on! He willed his thoughts to go straight to the boy's head. He was wasting time trying to get around him. spirit had been captured before and trained, before he escaped, so he knew what to do at all the tugs of the reins. But since there were no reins here, the boy would have to use his mane as a substitute.

Kyle walked soundlessly toward the sidewalk, his feet kicking up sand as he went. He could feel dozens of eyes watching him closely and held the rope in his hand as tightly as he could. The strain let up, and, before he knew it, the horse was walking at his side like an obedient puppy. A puppy whose head towered over him by nearly two feet... The horse's speed picked up, and Kyle forced himself into a jog alongside it, not wanting to get trampled or dragged behind the stallion. Just as he regulated his pace to match the stallion's, the beast came to a dead stop, and Kyle felt himself being yanked backward, the rope splintering into his hands. He winced slightly and watched the horse's every move. If it was going to act up now, he wasn't sure that he would have the strength to stop it. But the creature made no movement whatsoever. It simply stared at him with its dark, knowing eyes. Kyle looked back at the animal, his heart pounding and beads of sweat breaking out on his forehead. In his mind, he could see the stallion rearing up and crushing him with one mighty blow, but, for some reason, the horse seemed to have something else in mind. All at once, it became clear to him. The thing wanted him to ride it! Kyle frowned and back away in panic. He couldn't do something so reckless. What if it took off or bucked while he was on its back? The animal was wild, there was no questioning that. If it decided to turn on him, he would be dead before he even realized what was happening. Kyle glanced back to the beach which was now much too far to run for help. His gaze fell again upon the stallion, its serene eyes calming him slightly. Without allowing himself to rethink his actions, he stepped forward and placed one hand on the beast's back. Putting his pressure on it, he tested the horse before clambering up. Once at the top, he looked to the ground, suddenly feeling faint. Ignoring the desperate call to jump right back down, he wrapped his short arms around the animal's neck. What was he supposed to do now? He had never ridden a horse in his life. What had possessed him into thinking that he could now?

Spirit looked at Kyle, asking him where to go with his eyes. He pawed the ground, itching to run. Tell me to go somewhere.
